Giving Tuesday 2024 - How Your Giving Fuels Safer Streets in Macon
GIVE FOR A MORE BIKEABLE, WALKABLE MACON-BIBB COUNTY!
Giving Tuesday is here, and it’s the perfect time to support the mission of Bike Walk Macon: creating safer streets and a healthier, more connected community. If you’ve ever wished Macon had more bike lanes, better sidewalks, or events that make walking and biking more fun and accessible, this is your chance to make it happen! Every dollar given on this special day helps us turn those dreams into reality.
Did you know that thousands of people in Macon don’t have access to safe biking or walking routes? Nationally, over 7,000 pedestrians and cyclists are killed in traffic crashes every year—and the lack of infrastructure is a big reason why. Bike Walk Macon is working hard to change that.
Imagine a Macon where every street is walkable, every bike ride feels safe, and every child learns the joy of riding. That’s the future we’re building—one donation at a time. So this Giving Tuesday, join us. Whether you give, share our story on social media, or tell a friend about our work, every little bit moves us closer to a Macon where walking and biking are just as safe and easy as driving.
Together, we can make Macon a city that moves better—one step, one pedal, and one Giving Tuesday at a time. Ready to be part of the movement? Click the link, give what you can, and help make Macon a safer, greener place for everyone.
Join us in making Macon-Bibb County a place where everyone can thrive.
A FEW 2024 HIGHLIGHTS…
Community Engagement
This year, we reached over 8,000 people of all ages through beloved annual events like Macon Bike Walk Month, monthly Walk ‘n’ Talks, and Macon Bike Party. We also brought the community together with special events like Shamrock ‘n’ Ride and the Mobility Maker Party, making it easier for everyone to embrace active transportation
New & Expanded Events
This year we debuted Macon's Big Bike Ride, which connected nearly 200 riders together to highlight the bike-friendly routes in downtown Macon. The team participated in Macon Trails Day, offering six different walks and rides that introduced residents to completed and planned sections of the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail. Later in December, we will be expanding Play Streets Macon to Ingleside Village to transform the streets into safe, car-free spaces and to showcase local businesses, all while bringing families together for fun and festivities.
Safety & Education Achievements
We hosted two POST-certified safety courses to update local law enforcement and organizations like Macon Transit Authority and Pedestrian Safety Review Board on current biking and pedestrian law and secured continued funding from the Governor's Office of Highway safety for the 4th consecutive year, allowing us to advance crucial bicycle and pedestrian safety education. In addition, we expanded our one-on-one training sessions to reach more children, seniors, and individuals with mobility challenges, hosted a Smart Cycling Class to promote safe cycling habits, and partnered with LH Williams Elementary, United Way, and Georgia Safe Routes to School to strengthen the Walking School Bus program, teaching kids valuable pedestrian safety skills.
Advocacy Successes for Macon-Bibb County
We were proud that Macon-Bibb County secured $5.6 million in federal funding from the Safe Streets For All grant to create safer streets and bike pathways connected to Gray Highway. This will help continue improvements on Gray Highway after Macon-Bibb County and Georgia DOT installed several pedestrian medianettes on Gray Highway earlier this year. We supported the adoption of a new Traffic Calming Policy, ensuring safer, more walkable residential streets across Macon. The addition of Macon-Bibb’s first Traffic Safety Manager Weston Stroud marked a milestone in our advocacy work, strengthening local efforts to prioritize safety.
